Kirby's Return to Dream Land is pretty much the exact Kirby game we all wanted. Sure, his animal companions aren't involved (seriously, Nintendo, bring them back), but the same gameplay that made Kirby Super Star so much fun back in the 90s is present and accounted for. Add a whole bunch of powers, a fun cooperative multiplayer, and an inexpensive price tag, and you have a recipe for a great Kirby game. This is a fine game to see the Wii out on, or at least hold us over until Skyward Sword comes out next month. If you are a Kirby fan, you simply won't want to miss out on this one. Graphics 3.3/5 The Wii is certainly starting to show its age at this point, but for a 2D platformer, it still gets the job done. Control 3.9/5 The controls are solid. Double tapping to run is annoying, but otherwise the controls fit just fine. Music / Sound FX / Voice Acting 2.6/5 Let's face it, Kirby's shrieks are annoying, and the cutscenes in this game don't even have any sound effects. The sound could have been much better. Play Value 4.8/5 This game is just good clean Kirby fun, no matter how you slice it. Overall Rating 4.4/5
Kirby's Return to Dreamland is the game die-hard fans have been waiting for for years. Though recent bouts have found the series moving in more of an experimental direction, the traditional Kirby game is what gamers will always want the series to revert back to. What Kirby does and will always do well is provide gamers with a fun, lighthearted experience that's not bogged down by the complexities of many modern games. Sure, this game isn't reinventing the wheel but ask any gamer and they'll tell you that's just fine by them. Recommended Gameplay 9.0 Kirby games always seem to focus on perfecting gameplay and this one is no different. Everything from the vast collection of abilities and moves to the new Super Abilities are flawlessly implemented to make for ease of control. The game features a nice mix of level design to keep you on your toes, even if the difficulty is a little soft for the majority of the game. I like that the game doesn't force in motion controls just because it's on the Wii, but rather includes them when they're necessary for intuitive controls (such as powering up Kirby's Spark ability or Super Moves). Multiplayer is also top notch and nobody has to fight over who is Kirby (everyone can be him). Finally, the mini-games, though few, are enjoyable additions to the formula. Presentation 9.0 Kirby games have a sense of style that is difficult to match and the charm of the pink puffball leads to some vivid environments and extremely catchy tunes. This game, though not as ambitious as previous Renaissance platformers on the Wii, is still quite good to look at. The music also features a nice list of classic songs reworked for our modern age. Value 7.0 Kirby games are never the lengthiest, typically tapping in at around 10 or so hours apiece. This game follows the same mold with its 30 average sized levels. The extra content such as challenge levels, and mini-games do add to the value, but in terms of sheer length, this game isn't the size of Superstar. Fun Factor 10 You'd have to be a cynic to not find joy in a Kirby game. From the lighthearted nature to the awesomeness of sucking up others' powers and using it against them, Kirby has always been one of the most fun series I've ever played. Add multiplayer to the picture and you've got yourself a winner. Tilt 8.0 Overall rating 8.6
To some eyes Kirby's adventures will always appear childish and therefore possess, at best, a temporary appeal. He is so cute, so pink, so ready to camouflage himself beside a kindergarten xylophone, that one could suppose he is made to be outgrown. He is better than that. He is an irrepressible charmer whose value is in ignoring the browns and grays of gaming's more grown-up tones. He's the character built best to offer delight without rancor and brutishness. The ease of Kirby's games is no demerit, as he is spawned from an entire genre of game that had been wrongly jettisoned for many years only to return when it could again be appreciated. Simplicity—separate from easiness—is that genre's virtue. Coupled with that is the virtue of delight. Games as path to quick happiness is a value, and so Kirby games will always command my attention. Uninteresting level design, however, is not a virtue. It wars with the appeal of nostalgia in Return to Dreamland. The kids of Kirbys past may thrill to the new game, but for those of us who champion Kirby solely as a progressive, who wish even his return to his classic powers to in some way embody the experimental edge this smooth puffball has somehow attained, this game is a temporary stall of disappointment. It's hard to frown at Kirby. He's always smiling. But it's easy to look more forward to his next adventure and hope he never goes away.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land is a special game. It looks great, sounds great, and most importantly, it plays great. The game may not be intense levels of hard, but it's a fun and practically flawless platforming experience all the way through. And the added objective of finding everything the game has to offer is there for those who want the challenge. The only real problem I have with Kirby's Return to Dream Land is that there isn't more of it. After getting through the game's beautiful levels, I really wanted more. Like, a lot more. HAL has crafted a truly wonderful experience here--it's an experience that's so adorable, charming, and addictive that it'll constantly put a goofy smile on your face. Kirby's Return to Dream Land is good, clean fun; it's excellence in artistry; and it's an amazing gaming experience that should not be missed.
