A portion of a ZeldaDungeon interview with Nintendo's Dan Owsen... ZD: I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but you’re sort of a celebrity in the Zelda Community. Interviews you did 10-15 years ago are still quoted to try to prove the validity of various timeline theories. Dan Owsen: You know, at one point we had drafted a timeline and wanted to make it available online. We showed it to the guys in Japan and they basically told us that it would be best if we didn’t post it. They do have a timeline that has continuity between the games but they wanted to keep it open for how each player views the chronology of the series. There are a lot of connections between the games, but they do have a timeline that has continuity. It’s up to the player to place all the pieces together. ZD: So there seems to be a disconnect between you guys (Nintendo of America) and the developers in Japan. Dan Owsen: I wouldn’t call it a disconnect. Just that the developers feel that posting a full narrative would take away from the players’ imagination. Part of what makes the series so special is the legend that spans across the series and they wanted to preserve that in the players’ vision. It’s also why they have never given Link a voice. The story is told as if the player is Link. Giving him a voice would eliminate that attachment.

También es el hombre que le puso ese subtítulo al juego (el original era "Triforce of the Gods") y después dijo que eso no significaba que el juego fuera antes de los de NES:

Ocarina of Time seems to dip even further back, to the actual time of the events that were spoken about in the past tense in the manual for SNES Zelda. (This was the same in the Japanese version, too.) GB Zelda takes place shortly after SNES Zelda, where that very same Link goes out on a journey to further himself, yadda yadda yadda. He runs into a thunderstorm, he wakes up on Koholint... you know the story. Anyway, hope this helps. And thanks for doing such a good job on the Zelda texts. I can't wait for OoT.  ---John Dan Owsen: A fatal misconception in trying to determine the order of the different Zelda games is relying on the titles of the games for clues. Having worked on these games and helping to come up with the English titles, I can tell you that you are reading too much into them. Just because the SNES game was subtitled "Link to the Past" doesn’t mean that the game took place in the past. It just means that there was some connection between the events in the game and the past. As for the tense of the text in the manual, I wouldn’t place any special significance on that—it is describing historical events which by definition occurred in the past. I do have to admit that calling the characters in Link to the Past "predecessors" of the original Link and Zelda might have been a mistake, perhaps an error in translation. By the way, I don’t mean to demean the story in the games—I do think it is important. However, I know the game developers never want to pin down specific relationships between the characters in the game because then their hands will be tied in future games. Even the hinted at relations in all the game are causing confusion!

Creo que nunca van a publicar el documento completo con toda la historia porque eso les limitaría en el futuro cuando quieran hacer un juego que vaya en medio de otros dos, sería más dificil hacer una historia que no contradiga algo de ese documento.

Pero creo que si alguien le pregunta a Aonuma por la situación cronológica de cierto juego este no tendrá problemas en responder, como ya ha hecho en otras ocasiones.

Es obvio que la saga comenzó prescindiendo de ella, y simplemente se basó en "guiños" a titulos anteriores, pero llegados a un determinado punto, quisieron hacer encajar las piezas. Son ellos los que eligen que hacer, lo que se descarta, y lo que no.

A mi en el fondo me encanta la idea que tienen. El hecho de que la cronología tenga tantos agujeros y este tan dispersa le aporta un aura de misterio a la saga, que por algo es leyenda. Yo creo que forma parte de la magia.

Zelda es su obra y harán con ella lo que les dé la gana, que para algo son sus creadores, y si quieren que haya cronología LA HABRÁ, por mucho que les moleste a algunos fans (que me consta que los hay).

No entiendo porque hay tanta gente que dice eso cuando precisamente hasta Ocarina la cronología estaba clara (OOT-ALTTP-LA-TLOZ-TAOL). Fue después con los Oracles, The Wind Waker y los Four Swords cuando se empezó a complicar la cosa.
