Preliminary Japanese Sales for the Week Ending October 14, 2007
When compiling weekly data for Japan, ioi uses a bevy of sources. By Sunday Night (East Coast USA time), both first day data and preliminary weekly data is available for analysis. Taking both into account, here is an early take on how some of the figures will look this week. These figures are not to be taken as gospel, just an early take on approximately where the market will be for the week.
Software sales are way down this week – with no title in the preliminary top twenty selling anywhere close to 100,000 units.
Wii Software – Wii Sports and Wii Play remained out of the top twenty preliminary data again this week, although they seem to keep selling at about ½ the level Wii hardware sells each week. The two Wii titles that did make it – Mario Party 8 (7,000 to 10,000 units) and Dragon Ball Z: Sparkling Meteor (8,000 to 11,000 units) indicates that Wii software volume is low across the board – at least for now. Wii hardware should be in the vicinity of 20,000 units sold this week.
PS3 Software – Rise from Lair debuted this week – and it was the only PS3 title in the preliminary top twenty. The game sold 30,000 to 40,000 units. As a result, PS3 hardware may see a mild boost toward 12,000 to 14,000 units.
360 Software – No titles debuted in the preliminary top twenty this week. However, the Xbox 360 elite debuted – pushing hardware sales up into the 3,000 to 5,000 range again.
PS2 Software – Seven PS2 titles were in the preliminary top twenty. Arcana Heart, the top game of the week, sold 55,000 to 62,000 units this week. Dragon Ball Z: Sparkling Meteor sold 35,000 to 40,000 units in week two. Powerful Pro Baseball 2 sold 7,000 to 11,000 units this week. A Panchiko title sold 6,000 to 9,000 units this week, while two other titles which do not translate well into English sold 4,000 to 10,000 units each. GTA: Liberty Stories sold 3,000 to 6,000 units this week as well. PS2 hardware should remain flat – in the 10,000 to 15,000 unit range for the week.
PSP Software – Four PSP titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. The top selling title, Gundam Battle Chronicle sold 25,000 to 31,000 units this week. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops sold 15,000 to 20,000 units this week. The title which launched the revised PSP hardware – Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core – sold 20,000 to 27,000 units. Lastly, PSP’s top selling Japanese title – Monster Hunter Portable 2 – sold another 7,000 to 10,000 units this week. PSP software volume suggests hardware sales should be down again – likely into the 40,000 to 70,000 range.
DS Software – Six DS titles made the preliminary top twenty this week (two of which are Pokemon). Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (both versions combined) sold 60,000 to 70,000 units this week. ASH sold 12,000 to 16,000 units. A title which translates to “Trap of Murderous Intent” sold 32,000 to 38,000 units. Tamogotchi Connection: Corner Shop 2 sold 17,000 to 22,000 units this week, while Chinese Training sold 6,000 to 12,000 units this week. DS hardware should remain in the 75,000 to 90,000 range for the week.
